Yes, the resonanace of the animal head plus the wooden back with the
string (the string is a number of horsehairs put together) and sometimes
also a resonance string (a string pitched the same that doubles the
sound and creates an overtone) and the fact that it is strummed
rhythmically all should tell you that this is an instrument intended as
the bse for the singing, the same way as a moveable ison (maybe two or
three note or even one note harmony) rather than as a melodic instrument
used for unstrumental pieces. It lends a little drama also and is
ideally suited for epic stuff of many many verses.
