A building contractor gave us a quote and a time to build the
superstructure of our house. We bought and supplied all materials,
tools and labourers (including myself as I am a self-builder), the
contractor only supplied the skilled labour. There were some of the
usual delays. The structure is not finished and more time is needed to
complete the job. The contractor wants to get paid extra for this time.

How reasonable/common is this situation? How accurate is the contractor
expected to be in his estimate of time in terms of work and completion?

was it an estimate or a contract? I think its pretty normal for projects to
run over. if it was a contract, the normal delays & any changes are
considered extras. if you like the contractor & his work, you should pay him

It was a "gentleman's contract" (not written) as we met them through
family contacts.

Well in that case we are both screwed as we owe them money. The option
is to say finish the house or you don't see the money we owe you but we
don't want it to come to that.
