Dewalt Table Saw Fence Question (Model 744)

If you know this popular model, please advise the purpose of the long
"bar" attached to the fence that runs parallel to the fence and flips
from one side to the other. Obviously, I don't have a manual.

A ledge to hold up the board when the fence is rolled out past the table
top.
