Well, if you can figure out a way to hide butt joints so there is no
build on top of the joint, patent the idea. You idea of carving the
paper away won't work because it will crack unless you tape over the
entire area, which sort of defeats the purpose of what you are trying
to accomplish.

A good taper would feather out the mud for a longer distance to make
the seam unnoticeable. Another way I have heard of is to use shims
behind the rock on the studs on either side of the stud the sheets
meet at. This creates a depression where the tape and mud go.
