Yep, just got through patching a big spot on a wall ourselves using this
method. But we finished off with drywall mud for a smooth finish. (not
a bathroom)

Use some Moisture proof sheetrock and screw it over the damage......use some
cheap water base caulk....big stretch around seams........seal with
primer.......
Rip out when ready to tile......
not pretty but a repair.
