Hmmm....I guess one could put in a section of ridge vent along the
hips -- hadn't thought about doing that for some reason. Wonder about
the water shedding since it would be running downhill some, though.
I'm pretty sure I've never seen it installed except on the top ridge.

There is no top ridge at all? The hips are the same size as the sides?
Why not put a powered vent in it and add a small attic access from the
ceiling below? Any place that could be done unobtrusively, like a pantry
maybe?

There is a pantry off the kitchen but it is under the hip section
which would nearly impossible to get into w/ the restricted
clearance. The rest is the kitchen and a sunroom where an access
panel wouldn't be at all desirable which is why I think that's out as
a practical solution.

Nearly impossible or impossible? This is something you would only have to
do to replace the vent motor which in my experiences is about every 10 or 15
years. Just a thought.

30 years ago, not so tough, now "nearly", when needed probably
actually... :)
Think I'l look at the Cora ridge strip mentioned; not familiar w/ it.
If that doesn't seem to suit (not easy to modify flashing at the wall/
roof interface owing to the siding so if needs much more than what is
there may opt out) I'll probably just stick a couple of the
conventional passive vents in there...have to be better than the
nothing that's there now.
