We have a problem. Today I was prepared to fix a leaking toilet. When
I went to fix it, I turned off the water from the cut-off valve and
still heard a hissing sound. I remembered that the ground outside had
been wet for a few weeks. It is spring, so I thought that my wife had
been watering her plants too much. I went outside and followed the
moisture to the side of the house, just outside the bathroom where I
could hear the hissing. Then, I issolated every water fixture in the
house and went to the meter to read it. The triangle indicator was
still spinning. The leak is on the opposite side of the house from the
water meter/main. I dug out the soil next to the slab and witnessed
cold clean water flowing out of the slab at a rate if 0.5 gallons per
hour. It could be more. I know I need to go into the slab to fix it. I
don't think I'll be doing it. Can you give me an idea of what this
repair job might cost? Any information would be very helpful.

My guess is somewhere between $500.00 and $50,000. But don't hold me to
that.

Seems to me that you just need to call a few plumbers, get some estimates,
and pick the one you can afford.
If you think you can do it yourself talk with the plumbers that are giving
you estimates as what they think they need to do. This way you can find out
if you would be able to fix your problem, how much will be needed etc.
