It's a terrible thing, isn't it?

Personally, I think your question(s) were too general, which is why
you didn't get a (good) response.

Since I don't have a gate, don't know anyone nearby who has a gate,
I'd suggest you do a walk around, find someone with a gate opener, and
just 'knock on the door' and ask them what it is, and whether it is
good or not?

I do know someone with one using a solar backup (or maybe it is all
solar, I'm not sure) but he's several thousand miles from me, so
that's no help to you.

2 of my neighbors have gate openers in this rural area. Both are sliders
with alphanumerical code entries. They have fence all the way around their
properties. I do not, as just the house area on the property is fenced.
One of the neighbor's gate was "down" for a few weeks as they left the gate
open all the time. Both have the inboard from the street fence border
towards the property that appears part of the gate hardware. That's all I
know as I obviously don't have such a gate, and have not had the urge or
need to investigate same.
