clay stucco on masonry stove.

i am installing a masonry stove in my houe and would like to finish
the cement blocks that make up the mass
with some natural clay or adobe finish. wondering if anyone has some
leads on this, or advice about
mix/application to keep the clay from cracking (can i apply clay
directly to the rough cement blocks-
do i need wire mesh?
