i have a 40 year old panel with 3 hot wires. the panel is 480 volt
with no neutral and ground. what do i have to do. can i run a neutral
from another box?

It sounds like you are dealing with 3-phase in a delta configuration.
What you have to do is contact an electrician knowledgeable in working
with such circuits.

That's some serious electricity. What is feeding it? Can't you run a
ground from the source. Why do you need a neutral? Or do you really just
need a ground?

What you need to do is pick up the phone and call an electrician!
