YOU ARE ASKING THE WRONG PEOPLE FOR ADVICE AND THE WRONG TYPE OF
CONTRACTORS FOR QUOTES
YOU NEED SOMEONE THAT IS A CERTIFIED INDOOR ENVIRONMENTALIST TO LOOK AT
YOUR VENTALATION SYSTEM
THEY WILL TELL YOU IF IT NEEDS CLEANED
NEW HOMES SHOULD ALWAYS HAVE CLEAN DUCT SYSTEMS BECAUSE THEY SHOULD BE
SEALED UNTIL AFTER CLEAN-UP AND PRESSURE TESTED FOR LEAKS ALSO IF THERE
IS A HRV OR ERV THAT SHOULD BE USED 24HR FOR THE FIRST MO TO HELP WITH
OFF GASING OF PAINT AND OTHER VVOC'S AND VOC'S IN TH HOME
IF THE DUCTS ARE IN NEED OF CLEANING IT SHOUL ONLY BE DONE BY A
CONTRACTOR THAT BELONGS TO THE NATIONAL AIR DUCT CLEANERS ASSOCIATION
NADCA THEY HAVE VERY HIGH STANDARDS FOR MEMBERSHIP
YOU CAN GO ON THE EPAS WIBE SITE THEY HAVE ALOT OF INFO FOR HOME OWNERS
I HAVE SEEN HVAC CONTRACTORS DO A GOOD JOB DUCT CLEANING BUT IF THEY
DO NOT CONSENTRATE IN INDOOR AIR QUALITY AND HAVE SOME REFRENCES TO
PROVE IT EG ALLERGIST ECT THEN I WOULD NOT USE THEM
TIME TO COMPLETE THE JOB IS NOT WHAT YOU SHOULD BE USING TO CHOSE A
CONTRACTOR PRICE IS NOT WHAT YOU SHOULD BE LOOKING AT YOU NEED
REFRENCES AND CERTIFICATION ALSO YOU SHOULD HAVE A GOOD REASON TO HAVE
THE WORK DONE EG HYPERSENSITIVITY TO MICOTOXINS, ALLERGINS, OR CERTIN
PROTEINS
THE MAIN SOURCE FOR THESE ARE IN THE AIR HANDLER AND THE SUPPLY DUCT A
FEW FEET AWAY IF A HUMIDIFIER IS USED
SO IF YOU HAVE THE DUCTS CLEANED THE AIR HANDLER NEEDS TO BE CLEANED
AND IF IT IS OLDER IT SHOULD BE REPLACED BECAUSE TO CLEAN IT RIGHT THE
EVAP COIL NEEDS TO BE REMOVED MOST HVAC CONTRACTORS WILL JUST SPRAY IT
WITH COIL CLEANER AND SOME BLEACH VACUUM IT OUT AND CALL IT A DAY THERE
IS NO SENSE IN EVEN HAVING IT DONE
IT IS A SCAM IN MOST CASES UNLESS YOU HAVE HEALTH ISSUES AND A DOCTOR
HAS POINTED OUT THAT YOUR HOME MAY BE A SOURSE OF THE PROBLEM
IF THE HOME IS OLDER THEN INSTEAD OF HAVING THE DUCT WORK CLEANED YOU
MAY CONSIDER HAVING THE SYSTEM AND DUCT WORK REPLACED I HAVE SEEN MANY
CONTRACTORS SLAP NEW BLOWERS IN WITH DUCT WORK THAT LEAKS IS
CONTAMINATED AND SIZED WRONG
DUCT WORK IS CONSIDERED BY MOST CONTRACTORS TO BE A PERMINATE PART OF
THE HOME IT IS MUCH EASER TO THROW SOME TAPE ON IT AND PATCH IT UP
ADJUST THE BLOWER SPEED TO COMPENSATE FOR U/O SIZE OR LEAKING
THE INDUSTRY IS CHANGING TIGHTER HOMES AND HIGHER ENERGY BILLS ARE
MAKING HOME OWNERS MORE AWARE OF IAQ
STANDARDS AND CERTIFICATIONS WILL WEED OUT THE NON TECHNICAL HVAC
CHANGE OUT "CONTRACTORS" WHO MAKE UP 70-80 % OF ALL CONTRACTORS WHO ARE
JUMPING ON THE IAQ BAND WAGON
THEY HAVE NO ABILITY TO PROVIDE REAL IAQ SERVICES AND HOME OWNERS WILL
REALIZE THEY NEED TO PAY A HIGER PRICE TO GET REAL IAQ PRODUCTS AND
SERVICES AND THAT MOST OF THE TIME THEY DONT NEED THEM
THE EQUIPENT MANUFACTURES ARE PUSHING NON IAQ EQUIPMENT TO NON IAQ
CONTRACTORS AND PUTTING A IAQ STAMP ON IT BUT THAT IS HOW AMERICAN
ECONOMY WORKS
THIS IS NOT A HVAC ISSUE IT IS A IAQ ISSUE AND YOU NEED TO TALK TO AN
IAQ PRO SOURCE NOT A IAQ MARKETING MACHINE ANYWAY GOOD LUCK
I FEEL BETTER NOW

for the most part, duct cleaning companies are nothing but scams.
there's usually a few low price leaders in every market, and all they
want is their foot in the door. Then expect a whole slew of other
charges, such as asbestos abatement, new duct work new equipment etc.

look for someone to remove all supply air and return air grills,
vacuum each duct, vacuum each plenum, pull the blower and wire brush
the blower wheel, clean the evap coil if any and drainpan, clean the
heat exchanger if any and do all of this in 1.5 hours? yeah right.

last but not least, ask about the chemical spray they use that
encapsulates and seals the duct work interior.....to prevent the dirt
& debris they knock loose but fail to remove from contaminating your
supposedly newly cleaned ducts.

Absolutely, positively, a total waste of money.

You are an idiot.

Only fools get duct cleaning.

First thing you should consider is cleaning your back yard of all the
mold and mildew.

That will cost you several hundred million dollars. Then you can
clean your ducts.

Idiot.

Cleaning the Supply plenum and vents is not necessary, of course--they
are always filtered. But the Return side....

I think I have a situation that actually might need duct cleaning--on
the Return duct only. My Ventilator supplies the return duct. The
continuous fan on my Carrier furnace stops for 66sec to light the
burners. During this time, the HRV is blowing out the return
vents--and sending out dust and crap. I've seen the inside of my
return vents--in my 55 yr old house, they are full of crap. Not mold
but big hairballs of crap. So, would I be an idiot to get my return
plenum cleaned? After all, a post about cancelling the 66sec interrupt
determined that it's not feasible.... and a relay on the HRV would
unfortunately put undue stress on the motor (according to Venmar,
anyway) and void my warranty...

Peace, Dan

I had the link and lost it - the EPA basically came out and said that
unless you have a mold problem, or your house has a bunch of crud in it
from just being built, that duct cleaning is a scam. I've torn out
ductwork that had been in place for 40 years and yeah, there was a
little dust on it, whoop-dee-doo.

Duct Cleaning is brought to you by the same people who say you should
change your oil every 3000 miles, which is a lie to get you to buy more
oil. Consumer Reports ran tests and said, several years ago, that 6000
was optimal. It's longer now with the more modern engines.
