buy the cheapest you can find. typically they last 2-3 years. Think
disposable, as in this disposable society we live in.

Yes, Google is my friend and also I think people in alt.hvac are my
friends, too. As far as quality of information that can be found in three
seconds time on Google goes: the page that you refer to actually rates
Kenmore 75050 5,150 Btu that also has 9.7 EER as the best choice.
http://www.consumersearch.com/www/house_and_home/air-conditioner-reviews/index.html

I guess, $100 for the 5200BTU unit (mine happens to be Haier HWF05XC7) is
not even all that cheap.

Still, the topic was efficiency more so than the price. I could find
larger units that I did not even have a room for (the one I installed it
in is 10x11') that were rated at 10EER and above, but I only needed a
small one.

So, is there a professional in the group that does not base his opinion on
an Internet based voting system that can tell if they do make window A/C
units for a small room that's more efficient than 9.7 EER? Or the size
simply can't afford better efficiency?

        You just don't get it.

It's like going into an audiophile group and asking 'what's
the best stereo for under $ 100 ? Can I get a built-in CD player and
a turntable for that price ?'.

The only answer is 'I don't now, fucking go see what Walmart
has on special'.
