I would put my money on the defrost elements. they are not really all that
hard to put in. I am not a pro but I will tell you how I checked mine when I
had the same problem. I took the cover off the back inside wall and thawed
out all the ice with a hair dryer. Looked at the heater elements and knew
right then they were burned out. They were blackened but the dead giveaway
was the element was burned in half. They look just like light bulbs you see
in the 500 watt shop lights but longer. If they look fine then start
checking out the timer. Every thing is pretty much plug and play. Just
unplug and remove a few bolts and then replace with a new timer or element,
then plug the wires back in. If you find the defrost system is ok then it
will be time to call a pro, or get a new fridge. I like to do as much
repairs I can myself. Most service men charge way too much for their
services. I had a water pipe bust under the house. Called a pro and asked
how much to fix it. He quoted about 100 bucks. So I took a trip to the
hardware store and about 15 min under the house It was as good as new and
only cost me about 6 bucks. I think 40 bucks would be reasonable for their
time and labor. 100.00 is just ripping people off. This sure is a greedy
world we live in today.
Hope I helped.

It costs more than $ 40 just to roll the truck to your door.
And BTW, $ 40 will get you 1/2 hour of my time ON THE PHONE, YOUR
DIME, cash in advance.

Wow you must drive a Hummer all day long. But you can afford it with those
high prices you are charging people. I have a 1/2 ton 4x4 pickup with a 5.0
L and it only took about 1 gal gas to go to the hardware store for parts and
back. Not to mention I passed the plumbing and heating place I called before
I decided to fix it myself. Granted, well established plumber and such drive
3/4 and 1 ton trucks that use slightly more fuel. But you cant set their
and tell me it will cost 40 bucks just to drive 3 miles. So I guess I will
not be calling you any time soon to fix my stuff.

I must dissagree, but you are entitled to your opinion as I am entitled to
mine.

what a moron... it takes more than just gas.... unless your insurance is
free, the truck is paid for, your maintenance, tires, repairs etc are free,
then what about the drivers time... is that supposed to be free also??
I guess the inventory and tools that are carried on the trucks are free
too?? What about the administrative costs?? advertising?? phones??
internet?? computers?? You seem to have forgotten the most simple of
rules.... "The customer pays for *EVERYTHING*"
Until you have a half a clue, then you would be well advised to keep your
uninformed opinions to yourself.

I agree with the other costs but you are paying them reguardless if you are
making calls or just sitting in the office drinking coffee. It mostly boils
down to how many people call you. The higher you charge the less people are
going to call you. Lower the price get more customers and then make more
money. Granted the harder the job and the longer it takes then the more you
charge. But from what you are saying, if you only get one call for that day
then it would justify charging someone 1000.00 bucks for a 10 min job and a
3 dollar part.
