Several of the Nation's ISO's (the traffic cops for electrical energy
distribution in the U.S.) have issued level II warnings for the rest of
today and tomorrow.
A level II means that Maximum generation and transmission capability
must be maintained in order to supply the system.
Currently, no Midwest generation is being exported anywhere else.
In our region, electricity reached a record level of 136,520 megawatts
yesterday. Today looks worse.
Watch for voltage sags, and some interruptions.
The tank is nearly empty, folks. People in our service area are
literally hosing transformers and doing thermo graphic analysis on 500
kV lines constantly.
Don't use the power unless you don't absolutely have to....

With all this heat, I'm expecting some overloads, trips, and just
good old fashioned blackouts. We'll do what we can in the meantime.

Nice try, Chris.
Overloads only happen when a system malfunction occurs.
The famous New York blackout a few years ago is an epitome.
Rather we implement (plan) rotating outages, sometimes called
"rolling blackouts". This is to PREVENT overload. Overload is bad.

Actually, the statement you made about environmentalists having anything to
do with Humboldt Bay NPP is completely wrong. The site is a tiny 63 MWe (for
you other guys, the MWe means net plant electrical output after thermal
losses - usually 2 - 3 times the thermal output in MWt is produced from the
fuel, as is converted to electricity) plant that was operated commercially
from 1963 to 1976. The average output of currently operating reactors ranges
between 779 MWe, and 1134 MWe, so this was way below the low end of the
scale for viability, and it was pretty early in the game.
PG&E shut it down in 1976 for seismic mods. Maybe there was an earthquake
in the area that resulted in something happening at the plant that they were
concerned about. In 1983 PG&E decided that the cost of the Seismic mods, as
well as the changes in regulations that resulted from the TMI accident -
probably the ERFIS requirement - as well as the really low output of the
plant made it not worth retrofitting.
None of this had anything to do with the "goddamned environmentalists". If
you live close to that plant, given the FACTS, you should be glad that that
particular plant is in shutdown. Also, the plant has not been "torn down".
It's very much still intact. Actually, the lessons learned from TMI
probably averted many disasters. Number one being that there should be
sensors that they use to control the reactor, and an isolated system and
sensors to make sure that those primary sensors are telling the truth (that
system is called ERFIS). If the operators at TMI had kept their hands in
their pockets during the whole incident, that reactor would likely still be
online today. BUT, the things they learned, and changes they implemented
likely prevented several real disasters (widespread low-level contamination,
not something like Chernobyl) from happening.
There's probably at least several other people in here that have experiences
at Nuclear Plants - HVAC is a BIG thing there - you ain't one of them, so
S.T.F.U!
