Is the thermostat mounting level?

You can't shout down a troll.
You have to starve them.

I have a gas fired forced hot air heating system and I replaced the
old
Honeywell Thermostat with a Heat Only Honeywell Thermostat from Home
Depot because the Heating System didn't kick on when the old beat-up
one was turned on. The Directions of the new Thermostat say for two
wire systems connect one wire to the R terminal and one to the W
terminal. I did it and the thermostat doesn't kick the system on. I
tried swapping the wires and the thermostat still doesn't work.

I touched the two wires coming out of the wall (There is only one
black
one and one white one) to determine whether the gas burner comes on
and
it does...

Any ideas on what could be wrong? Is it the thermostat from Home
Depot? It says 24Volt on it.
