Goodman unit with heat exchanger issues 1997

Hi:

Turned on heat Sunday for first time this year, heat made a noise and shut off. Had a service tech out to look at yesterday, shows me large hole in heat exchanger and cracks in other part of heat exchanger. Unit is Goodman, 11 years old. Should I replace or repair? First estimate to repair was $1400, replace for $5300 with comparable Goodman. I live in Middle Tennessee, 3 ton unit, any estimate of what I can expect to pay?

Jen;

Understand I couldn't give you an estimate as a contractor because I haven't seen your particular home and what needs you may have in addition to complete the changeout.

But, if you have a Goodman furance that's 11 years old, I'd contact the manufacturer with the model and serial number. Ask if it's covered under their existing warranty [unless you are not the original purchaser of the equipment.] You could find more information about Goodman's warranties here @

First off, dump the Goodman... its about the cheapest POS furnace made.

look for a contractor that carries a much better quality brand to begin with. Its not about the lowest price, its about the best quality equipment with the best quality installation, and no...its not gonna be free.

Why dont you get 2 or 3 estimates on the replacement and THEN decide what to do. I am curious though..........exactly what does a 3 ton furnace look like with a big hole in the heat exchanger?? I dont quite think Ive ever seen that. :-) Bubba

I presume you have AC also. Did they want to replace the AC as well as the furnace?

What's your energy for heat? Propane, natural gas, electric, oil, heat pump? Well, heat pump wouldn't have a heat exchanger to have a hole. Nor electic.

Would you be on natural gas, propane, or oil?

Replace it is the best idea. Might be a good idea to purchase a better unit. Goodman did have a replacement tubular exchanger furnace for the older waffle exchanger type. The furnace is free and the labor is set at $400. The problem is that no Contractor will work anywhere near that cheap. This program was set up to get the troublesome Waffle exchangers off the market. Talk to your Goodman Dealer about this. Or if you are paying for the whole shebang. Purchase a more expensive brand, something that is common in your area and can be serviced and parts are readily available. Its pay me now or lots more later. Do hire a competent licensed installer and have it inspected for proper and a workmanlike job. You might well consider purchasing a maintenance contract also.

You just have got to love that $400 labor charge... ;-p I think I can find a dozen or so for you to jump right on. I personally won't work at a loss.

Is that why all the Union Jobs are bing sent overseas...? ;-p

The price indicates that it is a Cheap Gas furnace with cheap

3 ton AC. Too cheap to be coupled with a Heatpump of any kind.

Hi Jen,

Biggest problem I see is the guy did not indicate what caused the problem, is this true? DOn't let em do anythng until you determine what happened to it.
