We have a Generalaire humidifier model # 1099 LH.

Generalaire said that they don't recommend cleaning the filter pad, it
needs to be replaced every 1-3 years depending on your water in your
area.

Is anybody out there familiar enough to recommend whether to or not
to clean the
evaporator pad ?

You received the correct info... now it's up to you to follow it or not.

I think he should call and ask the manufacturer about this several times
daily over the next week or so--could be they'll eventually change their
recommendation just for him....
