Is it possible to add a ridge vent without re-doing the entire roof?

sure, roofers usually do the entire roof and then cut thru the shingle and
wood at the same time. shingle over ridge vents look really nice and I have
not had any problems with them in 5 years and 2 hurricanes.

yes. remove existing ridge. cut back sheathing to have a 2" air space
at the peak. apply ridge vent.
