I'm about to filter all mail from gmail. All spam.

Do you mean actual email addressed to you, or usenet posts that have Gmail
on the from line, or both? I don't routinely use Gmail or Ggroups, but I
keep an account active (at least I hope its still active) as a backup, for
those times when my ISP is having the vapors. (I have 3rd-party DSL, so I
can still get out to the net, but my DSL supplier only provides
connectivity, not services...) I used to use my work account as a backup,
but they finally got around to locking all the fun stuff down, after ten
years.

But yeah, Momma G is sadly lax at enforcing TOS and nettiquette among their
clients. The clueless newbies I can deal with mostly (the ones that think
Usenet is part of Google), but the spammers and tinfoil hat crowd do get
tiresome.

aem sends...

And what makes you think the mail originates from a gmail account.
It's called spoofed addresses. Most spam comes from zombie windoze
machines on the NET. The owners of the machine don't even know it's
infected.

You need to add Yahoo and Hotmail to your filter too ;-)
Also dot(two letter country codes) and dot info. The list
becomes endless.

Better to filter by whitelist, a list of email addresses of
your friends that are allowed thru the filter. All others
are challenged or discarded. Or filter by content with
spamassassin or a good newsreader.

Yes, I have a gmail email address, only because my old
hotmail and yahoo accounts have become useless from their
own advertising and the endless incoming spam. Gmail does
have good incoming filters. I use it to receive alerts etc,
but never send from it.

No way would I ever buy from anyone using public mail
servers or newsgroups to advertise.

Familiar with all this too.

My HOSTS list has over 70k entries to put a dent in browser bad guys. and
PITAs. No I don't load them manually.

And another 8k+ registry block entries for other bad guys & PITAs. No I
don't load them manually either.
