Will different brands of remotes work if frequency is the same?
What latitude of frequency is tolerated?
My remote is a Overhead Door single button 360khz unit that needs to be
replaced.
What options are recommended?
Thanks,

Frequency is only part of the equasion. All newer models (last 20 years)
have security codes. Each mfg will have a way to sync up the remote to
the opener. Best bet is to get a compatible remote from the same company
that makes the opener or one that is marketed to open the particular
opener. GM has homelink in some of its cars. Its compatible with
homelink compatible openers. That sort of thing. Any ole remote will not
operate any ole opener even if on same frequency.

What's the deal with these universal keyring garage door remotes I see
advertised from reputable places?

They can be synced up with your opener to pass the correct security
code. You could not just use one, out of the box, to open any garage
door. Each garage door has a particular process for setting the codes.
Only the original, read very old, openers did not have some type of
security code setup.

Cordless phones are like this too. I had an original phone as a kid and
I remember driving around the neighborhood looking for dial-tone. Cant
do that anymore.
