I want to fix a GE gas oven that emits a gas smell for 10 seconds
before there is any ignition. Does that indicate something is wrong?
Normally it lights ok, but once, after not being used for 2 days, it
gave a pretty big bang, and then a lot of whooshing, according to my
friend's wife.
During testing after that, we noticed the gas smell every time about
40 seconds after pressing Oven, then Start. After a full 10 seconds
of gas smell, the burner lit.
Based on what you all have posted here, and what I've read on the net,
I think it is the ignitor, even though the current one is only 2 years
old and cost 70 dollars at a reliable appliance parts store. (One
that sells to the trade and doesn't advertise on tv or radio.) But I
can't convince my friend to spend the money again on my educated?
guess. He thinks it is the valve.
It's GE model JGRP17WEW4WW. SN VZ636174Q Wall oven.
Thanks.

Hi,
A weak ignitor is very possible. Time to grab the amp meter and test
the current draw....

Just leave it alone. In a few weeks you wont have to fix it, AS SOON
AS THE HOUSE BLOWS UP AND BURNS.
