Installing plastic brick molding--how to fasten? Phisherman 10-08-2007

My old (poplar) wood brick molding rotted out and I plan to replace it
with plastic brick molding. The storm door (with 2 glass panes)
fastens to the brick molding, so the molding needs to carry the weight
of the storm door hinge (similar to a piano hinge). How should I
fasten the plastic brick molding to the door jamb to give it the
strength it needs for the storm door? Are there 3.5" long stainless
(or exterior) finish screws?

You can attach the new molding the same way as the old molding was attached.
Use finish nails and apply caulk to nail holes.

I doubt that the "foam type" brick mold will be strong enough to
support the hinge. If the brick mold is "hard plastic", you might be
able to fasten it with trim screws, but why do you need 3 1/2" long
ones? The brick mold should only be about 1 1/4" thick on the short
side. You could use deck screws designed for "Trex" type decking.
