Nor do we hear them, or find droppings, or see the corners eaten out of bags
of pistachios left on the counter. All those things together convince me
there are no mice in our house. I've never been in a house with mice (like
our vacation place) where their presence isn't obvious especially at night
when their scurrying and gnawing is readily audible to anyone trying to
sleep, YMMV.

It's just that I work in hundreds of houses. Often the inhabitants don't
realize that mice are living in their walls and ceilings. In most well
sealed houses mice won't be able to get to the food stuffs in kitchens, but
will nest in fiberglass insulation in basements and attics. You probably
wouldn't know you had any, until the started breeding, and you had many

I don't know about mice because they're so much smaller. But if you
can find their point of entry you can place steel wool in the hole. It
works great with rats. They can't stand gnawing through the stuff it
seems. Mice will eat bugs so if you got roaches you will always have
mice.

Like you, they only sleep there. Each day, when it warms up, they leave for
work.

Think cat.
