Hey everyone
I'm going over my last heating bill, and was just curious what kind of
averages there are for gas usage in homes.
Now, many things will throw the averages off - degree heating days, temp
you keep your house set at ect. BUT
lets just assume that by and large, if people post their general location,
and highest thermostat setting (assuming using a programmable)
that we can guessetamate a few averages.
for example
I am in South East Michigan have a 2200 sq foot house keep the thermo set
at 62 in the day 69 evenings and 57 nights I used 222 ccf of gas during
December.
is there an general relation here, 1000 sq of house equals 100ccf of gas
usage in an "average" winter month, provided you use "average" inside temps?
I guess what I really want to know is,
is my gas usage out of line with the rest of yours.
what are the rest of you using per month?

Call your gas company, they can tell you what the average is.

I'm in NE Ohio. 1920's home, 1000 sq.ft., insulated (old), original
windows with storm windows. From Dec 13. to Jan. 20 my gas comsuption
was 10 mcf. The weather on this billing cycle has been more mild than
usual. I believe my comsuption in previous years on the same cycle has
been 12-15 mcf. Indoor temp set to 65 when home, 62 at night. Previous
years we have had the temp set higher.

It's tough to compare, but see if this helps. NE Ohio, new home, 2700
sq.ft, high-eff. gas furnace with heat-recovery vent and better than average
insulation including 3-layer low-e windows. Thermostat set to 68 day and 62
night. Last gas bill 20.6 MCF. Average temperature for the period was 27F.
Has anyone actually tried getting data from the gas company?

In PA, every time a gas or electric company goes to the Public Utility
Commission for a rate increase, they have to tell them how much the average
customer spends, and how much the increase will cost them in real $. This
info is then published in the newspaper.
