When I did some joint compound patch up work to plug up some holes in
the drywall I quickly realized that it may not be smart to do so? I used
newspaper to plug up most of the hole and then filled the rest with
joint compound.

What are the downsides to this, if any?

Thanks

The last one In retrospect dumping the salt OUT OF the bags into wheel
barrow ( clean) spreading around the pool with shovel might of been a better
idea, to bad I didn't think of that.

He most likely already had the newspaper on hand.
