I seems to me there is a distinct difference between the smell of "death" and
"poo-poo".

I think you're going to have to start tearing stuff apart to get to the
source.

Fortunately, I've never smelled death.

It does smell like a LOT of poo.

Smells are chemically different and most people have smelled both.
One of my sons recently had a squirrel die in his chimney liner.
Odor, flies and maggots were a sure sign.
Same thing happened to me years ago when a rabbit got in a basement
drier vent and died in the drier. One wiff and I knew I had a
problem. When repairman got it out basement filled with maggots.

Animal poo smell is not as intense as death. Animals that are strict
vegetarians do not smell as bad as the omnivores - compare cows and
pigs.

Once you do, you'll never forget it. Cat urine smells like perfume
compared to it.

Skatole vs cadaverine. Both amines... both stink to high heaven.
