I often run into a situation where the valve stem assembly is almost
impossible to get off the valve body on sweat copper shut off valves.
Would appreciate any helpful hints on how to solve this problem.

Sandy,

Disassembly before soldering is good practice. Usually takes 2 wrenches
and minimal effort. What's your problem? What brand valve?
