I'm replacing a toilet and have a couple of questions about the wax
ring gasket. The one that I bought didn't have a sleeve. The old
toilet, which I've removed, had a sleeve with its gasket.
1) Should I use the plain wax ring, go back and buy a new one with a
sleeve, or use the old sleeve with the new plain wax ring?
2) If I use the plain wax ring, it has an interior diameter larger
than the drain horn on the toilet. Should I just press it against the
bottom of the toilet, or press it in so it touches the outside of the
drain horn?
3) If I use the old sleeve, I figure that I can cut the wax ring in
half so I have two, thinner rings, and sandwichthe old sleeve between
the rings. Is there something wrong with that plan?
4) Something else I'm missing?
Thanks in advance,
-Ben

Yer making it too hard. For the 3-4 bucks the right ring costs, unless you
need a plane ticket and passport to go back to the home center, I'd get the
closest thing you can find to what was there. If you haven't messed up the
new ring, or pulled the wax paper off, they will probably even take it back.
Some things just are not worth reinventing.

Plain ring will work. A new ring with sleeve will work too.

No. Put the new ring on the pipe flange and gently lower the toilet onto
it.

Throw the old ring/sleeve in the garbage.

Agreed. Just buy the new ring with the sleeve. Hopefully you have
more than one toilet as well, unless you are good at holding it or
going to the neighbors house. HeHeHE!

Wax rings are pretty much passe now. I went to the waxless toilet
seal on my last install. I'll never go back to the wax type again.
Google "Fernco waxless toilet seal"
