Hi,

Because of severe allergy, I replaced the entire carpet area in my
home with laminate/pergo a few months ago, including stairs, by
laminate specialists.

Since then my 4 year old son slipped couple of times on the way up or
down and got injuired with a big bruise on his nose at one time couple
of days ago.

Now, it's late but I need to take immediate actions for safety to
prevent more accidents from happening by the slippery stairs.

I heard that installing stair runners (made of rug/carpet) could be
one option. Otherwise, replacing them back with carpet.

Having called several local carpet stores, I couldn't get clear
convincible advices, and most of them either were reluctant to suggest
the stair runners or even have never heard of stair runners.

Any good suggestions for the best way to fix this situation?

Thanks much in advance!

- Young

I believe it's Armstrong that makes a plastic-based material that has
slightly raised big dots to help minimize slipping. It's more often seen in
commercial settings, and you've probably walked on it without noticing it.
It's nice stuff. Browse around this web site and see if you can spot it. If
not, call the company and tell them what you need to accomplish. Get the
name of a local Armstrong dealer, or check your yellow pages phone book.

Well I think you're definitely on the right track. You could go with a
continuous runner, or separate treads (do a Google
image search for "carpet treads"), which you might be able to install yourself
and would probably trap less dust.

If a carpet store hasn't heard of a runner for stairs, they're pretty clueless -
it's a pretty common term! I'd keep calling
around.

There are anti-skid adhesive backed strips you can apply. They may not look
pretty, but they work.

Your local home center may have something that is more decorative or blends
better with your flooring..

My uncle built his own house and had a lovely oak staircase. Very slippery
and it only took them a year or so to teach us all to wear shoes and not run
on the stairs. You can do it. We had 56 neices and nephews and we all
eventually learned.
You can do this too.
