Can I replace a 50 gallon electric water heater with a tankless electric
one? The current 20 year old water heater is hooked to a 240V 30A line and
needs to be replaced soon. I only need hot water for two people in a
townhouse.

wouldnt work without a major electric upgrade. you will need at least
a 100 amps, since the water must be heated as used.

your way better off with a standard well insulated tank

Thanks.

Any particular brands to look at? Any that I should stay away from? I'm
not one to go the cheap way but I also don't want to buy more than I need.

really matters little, only 3 US manufacturers. Buy from big box store
for slightly better prices. Newer tanks are foam insualted for energy
savings. Buying a more expensive tank gets you things like brass drain
valve, WAY better than plastic ones.

Look at first hour ratings and get the biggest tank that will
physically fit the space, to avoid running out of hot water and with a
nice long warranty for better stronger tank.

the cheapest anything is rarely a good deal long run, built to meet a
absolute price point, and the most expensive is for luxury buyers. mid
priced everything appears the best deal.

the Sears (Kenmore) water heater that I bought several years ago has been
great. I would avoid the heaters with only a 6 year warranty-the insulation
is not very good.
