Suggest you google "smoke pen". It is used for testing and finding
drafts.

Many home inspectors or townships use those smoke pens.

The last smoke detector I bought, about five years ago, can be tested
just by shining a flashlight at it.

Well, yeah, but wouldn't a stick of incense (about five cents) do as well?
