When tiling over new durock is it best to use thinset or does the
vinyl glue do as well

Durock has different textures. This from their site:
Dual surface texture - use mastics on smooth side for bonding material
economy, and thin set mortars on the rough side for improved
resistance to tile slip during installation

Thinset is superior to mastic and is really not that much more work.
