Dear Verizon Online Customer,

As a Verizon Newsgroup service user, we wanted to let you know about some
important changes that we will soon be making to our Newsgroup service.

On June 24, 2008, we will be modifying our Newsgroup offerings to only offer
groups in the Big-8 Newsgroup hierarchies, which are listed below. The
0.verizon.* newsgroup hierarchy will also continue to be available. Users
will not be able to post or download from any other newsgroups using our
Newsgroup service.

comp.*
humanities.*
misc.*
news.*
rec.*
sci.*
soc.*
talk.*

I had a similar problem with Embarq. They dropped newsgroups altogether and
changed from Earthlink for e-mail service to their own e-mail server,
meaning everyone would get a new e-mail address.

Instead, I kept Embarq DSL as my ISP, but signed up directly with Earthlink
to use their e-mail and newsgroup service. It costs $9.95/month, but was
worth it to me to keep from having to change all my e-mail contacts.

Unhappy with Embarq's change, I also downgraded the speed of the Embarq DSL,
which saved me about $20 / month, but I don't see any difference in my
normal computer ops. So I kept my Earthlink e-mail and all of the
newsgroups, and saved about $10 / month.

You are correct. There is no necessary connection between you internet
connectivity provider and your ISP. If you don't like Verizon as your ISP,
switch to Earthlink or some other ISP.

Umm.. ISP = Internet Service Provider.
What exactly is a "Internet connectivity provider"?

Since Verizon is reducing their service provided, you should ask them
to reduce the bill too..
