I wouldn't have believed this if I hadn't just seen it: working in a
building owned by a friend, I saw floors--finished interior ones--made
of OSB.

That's right, oriented strand board; you know, that underlayment stuff
that's so ugly nobody in their right mind would consider it for finished
work, right? Except that when it's sanded and varnished, it looks really
nice.

I don't know if this is something that's even been published anywhere,
possibly in some architectural magazine or other; the architect who
remodeled my friend's building suggested it. It was installed more than
a decade ago and has stood up to wear pretty damn well.

I knew a guy that used OSB for a counter top that was finished with a
clear resin. This was years ago and was the first time I had ever seem it
being used. I'm not in the same state anymore and have not stayed in touch
but was impressed with the way it looked then also. He was using it as a
bar top in a basement family/recreation/entertainment room and it fit in
very well for the setting.

inlaws have a waxed cork floor. I woul dnever belive it could survive
my children for a day, but had held up well for the last 6 years.

Cork's pretty well-known stuff. I have one client who has it in her
kitchen. Nice and resilient, and much prettier than that OSB stuff.
