I am not sure if I am in the right place but ...? The washer will fill with
water but the motor does not start, the electicity is fine, there is a quick
bang sound when you close the cover when the dial is set on spin. Could a
motor go without any warning on a five year old machine. Is it worth pulling
out the motor to have it checked or could it be something else. Thanx for
any help!!!

Is it humming at all? You may just have a bad coupler. Look for little
chunks of plastic on the floor under the machine
The lid switch can also be bad if the motor really isn't going.

the bang does not sound good and I think it indicates that my suggestion is
not the problem. but just in case. if the motor keeps going (after the
bang) but the basket never moves, it could be a small part that connects
the motor and the basket. (excuse me if the terms are not exact ;~)) if
that breaks, the motor may be working fine but may not be able to do its
"work." it is essentially a wheel with holes in it. Both the motor and
the basket have points which fit into this piece.

Here is an idea. The pump on a direct drive machine is connected
directly to the motor, and so is the gearcase through a coupler. If
there is something in the pump that is keeping the impeller from
moving, then the motor may try to start just a bit before it binds, and
this may be the sound you hear. You can access the pump by tilting the
machine back. It is right underneath, at the front. Release the clips
at top and bottom that hold it to motor, swing it off the motor and out
of the way, and then start your machine back up in spin. If it spins,
then you know that the pump is the fix. You can remove it from its
hoses by releasing the two clamps. Remove whatever is in there, or
replace it. I bet you'll find a garment. Let me know if I was right.
