I have a two-sided wood fireplace with a broken cast iron gear. The
person who could fix it indicates that the old gears he has on hand are
too wide (about 1 1/2 inches in diameter). This is a slim gear (about 1
1/8 inches in diameter). The broken gear is 5.5 inches long and must be
longer. The person who could fix it indicates that any gear with the
same diameter will be the appropriate length (it needs at least an
extra 1/2 inch). Does anyone know who might collect these and have
them for sale? To reproduce it in steel will be at least $800, I am
told.

The "person who could fix it" can't??? I don't follow... :)

How is the present one broken? Depending on the type of break, a good
welder could have at least a reasonable shot at repairing it if it is
really something no longer obtainable.

I also don't understand how if it is the existing one it needs to be
longer (and don't understand "longer" in a gear, either, for that
matter). If you mean the hub isn't the right thickness then one has to
either assume it isn't actually the right gear to start with or there
is a missing bushing, perhaps. If the latter, wouldn't it be possible
to make up the missing amount w/ a bushing, or is there something else
missing in the place it's supposed to be? Or, I suppose the break
could be around a set screw hole opening???
