This idea will not eliminate spam, but I believe it would eliminate
much of the frustration associated with it.

For those of us who make legitimate posts, we would start the
subject / topic with a dash followed by a space, like this: - my
topic. (As seen in the subject of this post).

Then the legitimate posts will be shown first on the list of topics,
assuming topics are sorted on the subjects. All the spam would
follow, and we would not have to look through posts that do not
begin with the dash blank.

It might take a few weeks for the procedure to become known, but if
we all used it, our frustration with spam would surely decrease.

Further, I suggest a sentence at the start of each post, similar to,
"Legitimate posts to this NG should begin the topic with a dash
followed with a space."

If we begin to use this, it should soon be understood by legitimate
on topic posters and we could skip all the posts that don't start
this way. After this was firmly established, we could drop the
educational sentence.

Any comment?

A better idea would be to educate people on how to use the filters in
their newsreaders.
I don't see any spam in this group, it's probably because I know how to
use the filters. My spam filters are set on the newsreader, not the
individual groups, so I only need one set of filters to cover all groups
that I currently subscribe to, and any groups I may subscribe to in the
future.

My filter has been specific to alt.home.repair, but Agent makes it
easy to tell it which groups to work on. I just had to add the Agent
group.

There was a post last week about the filters. I implemented the suggestions
and most of the spam has magically disappeared. Thank you to the original
OP.

Yeah -- you should learn how to use filters and killfiles.

Me, I'm going to add something new to my filters, so that I don't see posts by
people who can't figure out how to filter spam:
alt.home.repair drop Subject:-

Thanks for the suggestion.
