Well, in spite of the negative comments telling me I am dumb and
need to learn how to use filters, I still think it is a good idea.

Won't bother you highly educated snobs again.

Actually, Bob, I like your idea. The
only problem is that the spammers
might adapt is also. But, I don't think
that they'd bother to actually read the
group and figure out what is happening.
BTW, I implemented the rules
in Thunderbird that were posted last
week. They do help ... but some
spam still slips through. So, I've
added more rules to catch them. In trying
to filter out all the spam, I find
myself more interested in the quest to
totally eliminate the spam than to read
the content of the group .... and
that ain't good.

Sadly, there is no "good" solution to the spam problem. As Art said,
Bob, the spammers would just eventually learn your workaround and
incorporate it into their spam. Filters help but aren't a final fix
because there will always be some new wrinkle the spammers will use
and you'll have to develop a new filter. Even killing every post from
a specific domain such as Google Groups won't do the trick, because
(1) the spammers will move onto some other equally open posting
opportunity and (2) you're killing legitimate posts from there as
well.

I know, I know, I'm preaching to an empty church, as I'm posting from
Google Groups. I like their UI much better than any newsgroup reader
I've seen, so if someone decides to kill any insights I offer in this
group that's there loss then, isn't it?

And then there are those that have to use Google Groups because the
corporate image on their work-place machine will not allow for the
installation of newsreader applications.
