amana fridge model BRD18V2E
maybe 6 years old.

bottom drawer freezer, with ice maker.

the ice maker stopped making ice. (the supply tube is frozen)
more than that though, the back inside wall of the freezer section is
covered in frost.

the freezer is keeping things barely frozen.(things are between frozen rock
hard and mushy) the fridge compartment is adequately cold, but doesn't feel
quite like it did before.

i pulled it from the wall, unplugged it, removed the back cardboard cover to
get to louvers, etc. vacuumed everything, and there wasn't anything to
block airflow. the fan that is visible on the bottom back of the unit is
evidently working, because as i unplugged the unit, i saw the fan stop
spinning through the louvers.

no real evidence of freon/oil anywhere that i could see.
no odors of anything burnt.

any ideas on what to look for?

Thanks.
perry

The drain is probably frozen. When the defroster runs, the water drains
out through a tube in the bottom rear and into an evaporation pan. It's
common for that tube to get partially blocked with debris, then it
freezes up and you get your situation.

Put all your food in ice chests. Let the fridge sit unplugged for a few
days with the doors open. Mop up all the water that drains out. *Gently*
clean out the drain tubes (there's probably one on the refrigerator
side, too). Run a dilute bleach solution through to kill mildew. Since
it's empty, give it a good scrub inside and out. Plug it back in to see
if it's working. If so, load it up. If not, call the repair man.

Defrost system problem of some kind. Timer, or defrost heater, or bimetal.

AKA termination thermostat.

Either that, or it's a metal who bonds to other metals, or to nonmetals.
