Here is a possibility
Has any water been allowed to run into the drain recently ?? If not,
then the "trap" has probably dried out. You should have a water trap
somewhere behind or under the drain. It should always have some water in
it to "seal" the pipe from allowing sewer smells from entering the
house. Same under your sinks and in the toilet.
Also possible the trap is leaking, and won't hold water.
