retractable awning, roof mount?

retractable awning, roof mount? TP 08-10-2005

Anyone have one of these lateral arm retractable awnings? I
have a patio that gets mid and late afternoon sun. These awnings
look like they would work for me. There are just so many
options, like motorized with remote. Or even an extruded cover
or even roof mounting brackets. Then you get into the stronger
joints and motors. Lots of colors too…
I’m looking to put one up, need to decide on if mounting on
the roof is a good idea? That would give me more head room,
since my overhang is at the minimum 8’. But we get lots of snow
in western N.Y. I hate to lag anything into the roof. The Matrix
brand sold around here. I’m looking at a 16’ wide, with 10’
projection.
Opinions welcome.

Sounds like a sail just waiting for a wind, to me. Two friends have had
them. Each are on their second one. Their first ones were taken by the
wind when they were left deployed.

An expensive sail if you ask me. Too many moving parts. Mounting is
suspect.

But, hey, if they work for you, and you want one, go for it.

We bought the 18' by 10' Sunsetter motorized model with remote several
months ago and are very happy with it. Bought it at Costco, they delivered
it in a 20' heavy cardboard tube 2 weeks later. Our roof overhang is only
7'10" off the ground, but we decided to take a chance and mount it on the
stucco wall under the eaves anyway. By the time it is fully extended it is
a bit low but still way above our heads so we haven't found it to be a
problem.

Thanks for the responses. We are leaning toward building a
pergola now. I can’t believe what they want for extruded vinyl
products. (Where can you buy 20 foot lengths?) Cedar is
expensive also, plus the maintenance. That retractable awning
is looking like a bargain…
